As membrane and membrane reactors becomes more and more interesting commercial alternatives for several applications, so it raises the importance of their mathematical modelling. In membrane science, modelling is a multi-scale activity: from the modelling of surfaces properties to the models of transport through the membrane, to the module, reactor and process design and up to environmental assessments. Membranes’ modelling should find a compromise between the simplicity required for macro-scale technical evaluations and the complexity to catch all relevant phenomena occurring at micro-scale. In this lecture, a general overivew of modelling activity in membrane science will be presented, introducing main activities, methodology and challenges.
